John Stephen Powell, 58, was called home surrounded by his family to be with our lord on December 20, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on March 25th, 1963 in York, he was the son of the late Charles Gambrill and Madelyn Powell.
Steve went to school in the early years at St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Phineas Davis, and William Penn Senior High School. He served in the United States Army for 29 years first in combat arms, an Air Assault School Instructor, A JROTC instructor in Fredrick, Maryland, and as a recruiter where he was rewarded for the enlistment of over 150 fellow Americans. He also served in law enforcement for 7 years working for the City of Savannah Police Department, City of Brunswick Police Department, and the Glynn County Police Department serving on the DUI task force. He has driven limos and escorted Rolex watches from one state to another.
Prior to retiring Steve attended truck driving school where he drove for Old Dominion and Roll off trucks for CSR. He attended York Technical Institute where he completed his Criminal Justice Degree. Steve was an avid photographer in his spare time and loved spending time with his RC trucks.
Steve leaves to cherish in his memories his loving wife Wanika Powell. Daughters Christal Powell (Martin) and Stephenie Powell both of Georgia, Shalai of York. Sons Damon, Ronald, Rashi of York. Sisters Monica Washington (Clive) of England, Pam Scott of York, Monique Gunn of Maryland. Brothers Mike Powell of Houtzdale PA, Mark Macklin Sr (Freda) of York. A special love for his nephew Mark Mackin Jr (Amy). He also leaves to cherish his grandchildren, Christina, Kaylen, D’aire, Sai’ez, Malia, Jalon, Na’zye, Isabella, Emirah, Amari, Saveah, and Amias. Aunt’s Josephine Johnson of York and Aunt Mary Roscoe of York. He also leaves a host of nieces, cousins, and nephews who loved him dearly.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents Madelyn Powell and Charles Gambrill and a sister, Myra Powell.
Funeral services will be held on December 30, 2021 at Jazbez Ministries, 40 Jefferson Avenue, 17401 with Pastor Adrian Boxley officiating. Visitations will be from 11am-1pm with the service following afterwards. Military Honors will be presented by the York Country Veterans Honor Guard.
